Home Maintenance You Don't Want to Forget

It can be really easy to forget all the working parts in your home that need inspections from time to time. Doing these check ups can save you thousands of dollars and headaches in the long run. Though there are various maintenance tasks we complete throughout the year to prepare for upcoming seasons, there are a few that we often forget need attention. Here are some ways that can allow you to save big bucks on repairs, energy and above all safety.

  1. Sump Pump Check Up.

    • It’s important to check the sump pump in order to avoid flooding in your basement. Flooring, carpet, and appliances would need to be dried or replaced all together. The sump pump should be checked roughly 4 times a year by pouring a bucket of water into the sump area, which should then trigger the pump to drain water out of the basement. If this does not automatically happen, it is worth having it serviced or having parts of the pump replaced.

  2. Draining Water Heater Sediment.

    • Draining your water heater of sediments is a necessary precaution so you can keep your water heated properly, prevent leaks in the tank and reduce energy bills. The buildup of sediments causes inefficiency of heat and early failure of the system. Draining the water once a year will allow the lifespan to be lengthened and for you to have better energy efficiency.

  3. Dryer Vent Clean up.

    • Cleaning out your dryer vents will not only to prevent any home fires, it will also keep you from wasting energy. This vent allows air from your dryer to make its way outside your home. To clean the vent, you can use a dryer vent vacuum cleaner attachment to suck out any excess lint buildup. This process should happen at least twice a year.

  4. Garage Door Inspection.

    • Corrosion and metal fatigue are common with garage door hinges rollers and springs. A way to prevent this and extend the life of these parts is adding lubricant at least once a year. Be sure to take precaution with mess and cover any walls or other surfaces that have the potential of being sprayed with the lube.

  5. Mice Nest Maintenance.

    • Warm and cozy little nooks in or around your home are typically the best winter hideouts for mice and other critters. Often times these hideaways are in spaces where equipment isn’t being frequently utilized. Chewed wires and nests can cause severe damage so always be sure to check that these types of areas are clear so you don’t have unwanted equipment or vehicle replacement expenses.
