5 Ways to Modify Your Home for Accessibility

Aging in place, home for accessibility

Being able to stay in the home where you have made a lifetime of memories is something that you should not have to sacrifice due to age or any other health condition. Luckily there are some ways to modify your home to make it more accessible for all ages or anyone who wants to age in place.

  1. Safe and Accessible Bathrooms.

No matter what age you are, bathrooms can be tricky. There is always the risk of slipping or not being able to get in or out of the tub. The CDC estimates that 60% of injuries typically occur in the shower or bathtub. A good way to modify this part of your home is installing a walk in shower. Installing a shower bench can provide further support and ease.

  2. Grab on.

Grab bars and handrails are a simple and easy solution to prevent falls from occurring or reoccurring. Rails and bars come in a variety of shapes and sizes that can suit the areas of your home where they are needed.

  3. Ramps

Entryways tend to be very difficult to access. Adding a ramp can help anyone with mobility difficulties and can reduce accidents. Some things to keep in mind when adding a ramp to your home are some basic ADA and other code requirements in order to build a safe and sturdy ramp.

  4. Kitchen

A way to make your kitchen more accessible is by relocating commonly used items to lower cabinets and arranging appliances near sink or easier to reach parts of the counters. These types of changes will allow easier access and flow in your kitchen.

  5. Floors

Carpet and rugs can pose as a tripping hazard and make mobility a challenge with walkers or wheelchairs. Hardwood, tile or vinyl flooring will help make getting around your home effortless.
