A Guide to Handyman Pricing

Many people struggle with finding a handyman that is both reliable and reasonably priced. It can really depend on the size of the job and the amount of time it takes to complete it. Discussing the project to its entirety is important so you understand the depth of the project and what lengths it will take to fix this part of your home. Here are some ways to guide you through finding the right handyman with the right price and experience.

What do I need a handyman for?

Ask yourself this: do I feel capable and safe to do this project alone? DIY projects are great, still, knowing your limits can help save you time and money if the project takes a wrong turn. The main question you don’t want to ask yourself is “did I do this right?”. Uncertainty and worry should never be the conclusion of a project. (When in doubt, hire a professional)

Hourly Prices.

Now the price of the handyman per hour depends. If you hire someone who is independent and local then they will charge between $60-$65 an hour. Now, if you hire someone from a larger business than prices could get up to $125 or more an hour. While there is the idea that if someone is working for a larger company, their standards of work and job completion may be higher. On the other hand, running an independent company is a lot of pressure. Trying to get your name and business up and running is something that the owner and employees genuinely care about. So they want to make sure you are happy and that the work they have done is above your expectations so they can be further recommended amongst the community. All things considered, if the price is right for you and the recommendations and reviews make you feel at ease then that will narrow your decision.

Finding Your Dream Handyman.

Here are some ways that you can prepare before consulting with a handyman.

  1. Check out your house.

Make a list of all the things that are giving you a headache and determine what takes priority in your home. Better yet, if something takes 20 mins to do, bundle some tasks together to make sure you’re getting the most out of your payment and list any special materials that need extra attention.

  2. Surf the web.

Their website should have a list of their services and reviews. Some service items may not be listed because they may be a case by case basis.

  3. Give them a call.

If you’re not tech savvy, then call to ask further questions. Understanding their work experience even for the little things is extremely important. Ask to see old projects and the range of tasks they are able to do that match your needs.

  4. Discuss payment options.

Setting your budget is important. Some handymen will charge hourly with a minimum, some will charge a flat rate for the task and others will ask for the money up front - don’t go that route.

  5. Discuss Estimates.

Get estimates in writing so you know what to expect cost wise and the intensity of the job. If the handyman is doing a job and sees something else that is broken or damaged along the process, make sure they consult those extra fixes or possible charges with you.

  6. Check for Liability Insurance.

This allows you to be covered in case if something were to happen to him or her.

  7. Job timeline and completion.

This is also something that should be in writing. Make sure to communicate with your handyman so you both know the schedule and when the project is to be completed.

Contractor, handyman, or both?

“What’s the diff?” You might be asking. A contractor helps with projects that need to be up to code and require inspections and permits. Many contractors work in different areas so be sure to know what category the project falls under so they can perform within their licensing. In many states there are laws that require a contractor to complete a job if the task payment exceeds a certain amount of money. Being up to code not only gives you reassurance of safety and the ability to sell your home later on, but also allows you to be properly insured if an accident were to happen.

Handymen are definitely an affordable way to get the job done. They can handle the ever so daunting tasks that you may not have the ability or time to complete and can tackle the projects are deceivingly precarious. There are some jobs that handymen aren’t licensed to do, which is why some are both a contractor and handyman or know of someone who is reliable to take care of your needs. In any case, it is important that the handyman will discuss if they do or don’t feel able with a certain breed of jobs.

Finally.

We understand how challenging it can be for a homeowner and the various ways that maintenance of a house can be overwhelming. Be sure to spend time planning your tasks, budget, and communicate any other legal or material needs.  Handymen are meant to aid your home care process with convenience and ease. While, of course, getting the job done right and well.
